Remembering that our tasks are to Inspect, Clean, Dry and Ventilate, obviously our first task when being called out for a mould treatment at a Melbourne property is to inspect, determine and identify any signs of mould growth and determine the cause. We can achieve this in a number of ways. Obviously the first and best way of determining the presence of mould is by a visual inspection of both the building itself and the roof cavity and crawl space. In addition to a visual inspection we can utilise both our infrared thermal imaging cameras (which can locate heat and cool spots invisible to the eye) and our inspection cameras.
Our cameras can inspect areas of interest like HVAC central heating systems where mould is likely to take a hold due to the warmth and often moist atmosphere.
Often mould can be located by following the moisture trail, which itself can be identified with the use of moisture and humidity meters (right). Moisture detectors lead us to the most common source of mould growth - moisture. Humidity meters provide evidence of elevated humidity readings, a certain sign of positive mould growth conditions, generally due to a lack of ventilation or moisture intrusion. The inspection will also cover testing for excessive mould spores using our particle samplers (pictured below).
Inspecting for the presence of moisture and from there, mould - whether the presence of moisture has already been established or suspected or whether its presence is unclear - involves the marrying of experience and training with sophisticated and powerful equipment. (Pictured below) Infrared inspection cameras measure the difference in temperature on any given surface. Therefore, potential damp patches can be identified, even if they cannot be visually inspected or measured with a traditional moisture metre which relies on touch to gain a measurement.
